ReplyDeleteThe police have warned motorists that those who do not possess their original driver’s licence while operating any motor vehicle in a public place from September 1 (Friday) would be liable for a fine of Rs 500 or imprisonment up to three months as per the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988, a release said.
Representative Image Chennai: The police have also clarified that, according to Section 130 of the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988, any police official in uniform can ask for the driver’s licence of motorists and that the law mandates the vehicle user to produce the original licence to the concerned official for his perusal.
“According to Section 181 of the Motor Vehicle Act, any motorist who is not in possession of the licence could face an imprisonment up to three months and the same applies for those who carry laminated photocopies of driver’s licence,” the police said.
The new rule is being implemented as per the directions of a Supreme Court Committee for Road Safety which has urged all state governments to immediately cancel/suspend licences of those motorists who violated specific road safety violations while operating their vehicles from September 1.
“To comply with the SC guidelines, the state police have made it mandatory for all motorists to carry their original licences so that it could be immediately suspended or cancelled if the motorist was found violating road safety guidelines causing danger to others motorists,” a police official said.
